Berkley closes in on picking pot business applicants

Berkley officials are getting closer to selecting the top three cannabis businesses that will be allowed to open in the city’s commercial areas.

City Manager Matt Baumgarten in a public meeting last week scored marijuana license applications submitted to the city during a two-week period that ended June 29, 2020.

The process was slowed by two lawsuits filed against the city late last year in Oakland County Circuit Court by more than a dozen marijuana businesses interested in opening in Berkley.

“The infighting in the (cannabis) industry is holding up a lot of progress with local municipalities,” Baumgarten said Tuesday.

A total of 30 marijuana businesses filed applications to get a spot in Berkley, he added.

Berkley officials want to allow a total of three medical marijuana dispensaries or adult cannabis retail shops.

Now that Baumgarten has assigned unofficial scores to would-be cannabis operators, the city will allow any of them who want to appeal their scores before an independent city hearing officer.

Berkley City Council members decided the city should hire a hearing officer to rule on any appeals.
