Indiana Marijuana reform Legislation

Indiana Marijuana reform Legislation

Senator Tallian (D) has pre-filed legislation, the Senate Bill (SB-213) which is aimed at allowing adults 21 and older to possess small amounts (up to 2 ounces) of cannabis.

Senator said, "Since marijuana programs cannot be approved by a ballot initiative, it is up to the legislature to follow the will of the people. Support for legalizing and taxing cannabis is at an all-time high, and 10 states, as well as Washington, D.C., have already legalized marijuana for recreational use."

Under the current state law, possession of any amount of cannabis is considered a misdemeanor and carries a punishment of up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

In order to establish a governing body for overseeing the regulated cannabis market, Sen. Tallian has also pre-filed a separate piece of legislation (SB-211), considering that the lawmakers eventually decided to legalize it in the state.

Ball State University has recently conducted a poll; the results show that 78% of the Indiana residents believe that those found guilty of possessing small amounts of cannabis should not serve jail time.
